Did 2 all grain batches on the weekend

Post by hawkbox » 1 year ago

My first solo batches. It was a lot easier than I expected it to be, I way over-complicated the process in my mind.

The first one was an ESB recipe I found on Beersmith and the second was just 2-row and Cascade hops.

I'm trying to baseline my equipment while getting the hang of everything. My grinding setup I'm rather proud of. Using a power drill cut my grinding time down to about 15% of what is was by hand.

I need to get on that power drill myself.

Yesterday I was just grinding away in this ridiculous September heat like an evil sweaty witch in my kitchen.

It was a double, too.

I picked up one of these:

Victorio Deluxe Grain Mill

First batch I did only had 2lbs of grain, however what a PITA to keep turning. They make a motor for it, but it is another $40. So I found a little 3" Straight blade screw driver that came out of a vehicle I no longer have, cut off the blade, squared the end so it would chuck into a drill without slipping and viola. Now the issue is that the screw driver bit is stuck in the mill now. Not really an issue, as I can't see me ever wanting to hand crank it every again. Just have to make the the drill is charged for brew day.

First thing I've done to all my mills is pull the handle...you won't miss it.

Made the mistake of not pulling mine off. Now it wont come off!

I managed to pick up a 9A mixing drill from Canadian Tire the other day on sale so that is much better than using my 18V Dewalt and killing the batteries.

Man I can't believe I've been doing this for over a year now. Time does fly. My wife has me making fancy shit now too. Vanilla Bourbon Porter is on the books to be brewed this weekend.
