Affordable CO2 Regulator in Canada

Post by stever1000 » 4 years ago

Where can I find an affordable CO2 regulator in Canada? I got some used equipment from a friend and found out the regulator is busted (leaks, handle is broken, both gauges read above 0 before being installed)

Dans homebrew in Vancouver has them for 75$, Ontario beer kegs has them for $65+shipping. Is there any place that has them cheaper? What about non-homebrew sources? Are they still reliable for beer gas?

Thanks

Sometimes not always the best idea to buy the least expensive. I did initially - then wound up buy Taprites from OBK. Much better regulators - more reliable, fine adjustment, and no problems. (And if you do ever have problems, parts are available.)

Buy once and be happy - in hindsight that is what I should have done!

I've learned the same lesson Wingeezer has including an unwritten rule that if the item name starts with "econo" or similar, I aint buyin it. A tap right is $20 more, well worth it

I agree. Taprite is the standard regulator in my opinion. The cheaper ones may come from over seas and I personally stay away from them. I have two of them and they are old. My first one was bought in 1998 and is still working fine. My second one was a used Taprite and I think it is older and physically beat up, but still works great.

I am biased since I can speak from experience having sold both models talked about.

We stopped selling the no name models years ago due to numerous quality issues. The exact same model actually. The internet is full of complaints on that model.

Then we switched to the commercial grade Taprite and the difference was night and day. Our support for regulators went away instantly. We were able to go from a 30 day warranty to a one year warranty and it feels like we have 99% plus less support issues currently.

Not sure who wrote that ad but the Taprite has way more features.

-Full size shank to fit tanks.
-Approved parts for use in Canada and the USA
-Been tested and rated for the applications sold for.
-Zinc bonnet instead of plastic and brass. This brings the rating up to 3000PSI from 1800PSI from other commercial grades. (economy not rated)
-Good for all gasses beer related. Co2, Nitro, Blends, Argon
-Built in o-ring to attach to your tank
-Left hand threads on the high pressure ports so do not put an unrated part on (we do sell proper rated gauges)

Taprite versus no name is like comparing an air craft carrier to a barge.

I got mine in 2007ish from the local TSC Store.... still going strong. I think it was around $70?

Princess auto has them, also, and likely at sweet deals from time to time.

Thanks everyone, I followed your advice and bought the regulator from Dan's Homebrew to save shipping costs. I would prefer the TapRite, but couldn't justify the time for shipping since Dan's is literally a few blocks away.
