Lagers Stored at Room Temp

I don't have a lot of keg space in my keezer. I made a Pilsner and it is in kegs for later in the summer. I may have to take them out for a week or longer so I can chill new kegs of beer and clear them up with gelatin. Will this be an issue with storing lagers at basement temps? My basement is usually around 70 F in the summer.

It's not ideal but can be done. You could always keep them in a swamp cooler? That would be a little colder than the 70 F....

Can you put a wet cloth around the keg? As the water evaporates from the cloth, it pulls a bit of heat from the surface below it.

I probably won't have to worry about it for awhile. I re-injured my ribs playing ball and am down and out for 2 months at least. I can barely lift my coffee cup, so brewing is on hold for now.

Thanks Doc_Drive. I have a Kolsch almost done in 2 fermenters that need to be lifted out of my Keezer. My neighbour can do that. He will also have to lift kegs into it when I am done. Free beer will help get it done.

Hopefully your problem is temporary, but I have back problems not likely to go away and so I don't want to risk making it worse by lifting kegs/carboys out of a test freezer, although in a pinch, I could.

I have two small converted Haier chest freezers in the garage that I use for fermenting and also crash cooling / conditioning.

So as not to risk my back, I built a simple rolling gantry crane just out of 2x4's that spans over both freezers. I bought a cheap electric hoist for it on sale at CTC for about $50 and it works just fine - no more manual lifting! I've been using it for a couple of years now.

Hi Cliff,


Are you perchance the fellow homebrewer who lives on the same street as me and who spoke to me one day last summer when I was out brewing in the garage?!

I live on Old Coach Rd. here in Burlington!

Anyway - as mentioned, I am pretty much ok with lifting now that I am all set up with the necessary equipt, but thanks anyway!

The only time I need little help is if I need to carry a full carboy down to the basement to condition if I need to free up space in a freezer in the garage, and I get my wife help me with that. I have carboy covers and Brew haulers that I use on the carboys, so it makes it easy for the two of us

If you are already an all grain brewer I doubt you'd learn much from me as I have only been brewing that way for a couple of years, but you would be more that welcome anyway!

If you have not tried all grain as yet, I agree it is well worth spending a little time with someone who has, in order to just see the steps of the process and get things in perspective. I had a couple of guys I spent time with that way and it got me off to a good start.

If you would like to PM me, we can keep in touch as to when I am brewing next (I just did a Shepherd & Neames "Spitfire" clone yesterday, it's bubbling nicely this morning!

You'd be more than welcome to drop by, although, being retired, I tend often to do most of my brewing on weekdays.
