Malt Mill Gap

Post by Reignman » 4 months ago

I used Bohemian Pils malt for the first time in a few years. My efficiency was only 73% instead of my usual 82%. Should I adjust my gap in my mill next time? I am still using the default setting, I think it is .32? I am still using my Valley Mill which is 15 years old.

.32?!! That's 320 thousands of an inch!
Must be a typo. Lol
I have mine set at .032". It is fine and I have no problems with efficiency.
My method is Biab. No double grind.
If you are using three vessel brewing though, I can't help you.

Yes, I have 3 vessels. I noticed when I used my battery drill there was not the usual drag on the gun. Maybe the grain was smaller or I hope not stale. Got it from OBK and I think they have a high turn over of grain.

Pick up a cheap feeler gauge and check your gap. Likely has worn out and your gap is a little bigger than it used to be. I would start there. How long did you mash? Boh pils i have had to go longer than 60 minutes to get full conversion.
In the fermentor: Cherry Brown Sour, Raspberry Sour, Golden Sour
Tap 1: Root Beer
Tap 2: Vienna Märzen
Tap 3: Lil' Runt Mild
Tap 4: Brown Sour

60 min. I thought you don't have to mash for 90 min anymore.

I mash and boil for 90 min. Always get close if not right on the numbers.
I agree with checking the grinder gap.

I use a Corona mill and it's basically flour when I finish so I can't be useful with that.
