Partial mash brewing is a combination of extract brewing and all-grain brewing. A smaller amount of grain is mashed to extract fermentable sugars, and malt extract is used to provide the remaining required fermentables.
Partial mash brewing is the intermediate step between extract brewing and all-grain brewing, and allows for a fair amount of customizability while remaining managable for beginner homebrewers.
