What is Homebrewing?

Post by XXXXX »

(From Wikipedia!)
Homebrewing is the brewing of beer, wine, sake, mead, cider, perry and other beverages, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, through fermentation on a small scale as a hobby for personal consumption, free distribution at social gatherings, amateur brewing competitions or other non-commercial reasons.
Primarily, homebrewing is making your own beer at home!

I would personally define brewing itself to be the steeping of some form of vegetative matter in water as to extract a desired element from it.

For tea and coffee, it is tannins and caffeine, from leaves and roasted beans, respectively.

For beer, it would be steeping malted grain, with the added caveat of adding hops, then yeast (to ferment the result).

So Homebrewing would be a double brewing process, and would sound something like

'the process of steeping malted grain to produce a malt extract, which is further steeped with hops, then fermenting the result with yeast, at home, to avoid the taxes.'

I just see it as drinking the good beer you want...instead of the crap most people drink!

Homebrewing is an obsession that starts with making a beverage at home with alcohol that you and your friends enjoy and ends with opening a brewpub.
