Ingredient switch question

Post by Impending Disaster »

Hi.
I want to brew a brown ale tomorrow (BIAB) but I don't have quite enough 2 Row. I'm wondering what might make a good substitute.

The recipe calls for 1 lb of Pale Chocolate, 1 lb of Brown, and 8 lbs of 2 row. I have the Pale and Brown, but only about 5 lbs of 2 row.
Checking my cupboard I can make up the missing 3 lbs with either Maris Otter or Heidleburg Pilsner

I could also make up the difference with Carafoam I also have 1 Kg each of
Light Crystal Malt (Lov 30-37)
Dark Crystal Malt (Lov 70-80).

I imagine the M. O. or Pilsner would change the flavour the least, but which one Any suggestions for being a bit more adventuresome? The hops are 1 oz each of Hallertaur and Cascade.

Edited to add: I could just go 8 lbs or either MO or Pil.

I would go with the Pils. Along with the chocolate and brown malts which are already giving you lots of flavour, and the recipe is calling for 2 row, personally I would go with the Pils. But, if you do decide to go with the Maris Otter, it will still be a good beer.
