Still awhile here to pick mine. No smell so far (or very little) and no lupin on the outside at all.

5lbs from a first year plant? I had all of 7 cones from 4 plants last year, and I am sure they weren't even close to mature.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat ECH... Mine have no smell at all so far and only very little lupulin in the topmost bracts... I guess that'll be at least another week for me...

5 lb from 2 first year plants though 1 had way more than the other.

Still, that is pretty good from 1st year plants. Most give little to no hops the first year.

I have peeled a few open, lots of smell there, and some lupin, but nothing on the outside at all. Plus they still feel "green" (well duh...they are green) and not papery. Still lots of time left, unless we get your snow! LOL Figure by mid Sept. should be good.

If I was smart, I would follow some of the other hop yards around here and judge it based on when they pick theirs, which I think is usually mid Sept. depending on how low it gets over night. 30C days for a week or so here, and they have popped!

It's a new year and a new harvest. I have been busy picking and drying hops all this week. First was the Willamette and Hallerteau and then the Mount Hood. This year I've decided to dry as usual in my drying racks, then I'm grinding in a meat grinder to reduce the volume. They have so far turned out great. Last years crop did not have any potency after a few months. With the hot temperatures of C30 - C32 this year they are drying in 24 hours or less in my shop with a fan. After an over night drying I grind and vacuum pack and freeze. I have high expectations for this years crop.

Hops hanging.jpg
Hops Harvest.jpg

This year I decided to hang the bines from the main cable without pulleys and simply cut them down onto a tarp that I had laid down, that way I cought any cones that got knocked off. I hauled the tarp into the shop and proceeded to pick off cones... for hours. The drying rack has been busy for the last week or more but with temperatures in the low 30's every day they dried overnight. I ground the dried cones in an electric meat grinder and vacuum packed and froze them.

I still have to wait for my Hallertau. Do you have any close up of a hallertau cone on the plant when you harvested?
