Disposable Oxygen Cylinder

Post #1 by tekknofobia2 » 7 months ago

I'm looking to upgrade my aeration system from aquarium pump to pure oxygen. They sell these disposable cylinders at home depot and home hardware that are 1.4 oz. How many batches would a tank of that size last me for? Say if I use it for 45 to 60 seconds per batch.

I've thought about using those, also. My issue was locating a left-hand-thread adapter for it without having to buy an entire oxy-propane kit.

I would imagine they should last a few batches but I'm just guessing.

Sorry I can't offer an answer, but I'm curious to hear others' experiences with these cylinders.

Left handed valve comes with this oxygenation wand combo.

https://torontobrewing.ca/index.php/anv ... -wand.html

And now that I actually read the whole description carefully it says that it will give you 10-15 five gallon batches
The tanks are $14 at home depot so it would be roughly $1 or so per batch.
Can anyone verify that you can get 10-15 batches based on their experience?

That sounds about right. I put a sticker on mine and do 2 carboys at a time. So, yea, about that. 2 minutes a carboy. I hate buying them and wish I had a 5 lb. tank which would last a long time.

I called Linde Canada today about oxygen tanks. $150 gets you a brand new tank with 23.66 cubic feet of oxygen in it. After that refills are $31 and it is on swap cylinders terms. You have to buy the tank from them though. You can't just show up and ask for refill. I'm not sure if you ever will need a refill though. If 23.66 cf is equivalent to 5lb CO2 then, according to Ontario Beer Kegs, it will give you enough O2 for 500 batches. I've done 14 batches since I started brewing 3 years ago.
I'm not sure if I can do 500 batches in a life time. I'm not a heavy brewer. The tank I got a quote on from Linde is rated R = 0.67 cubic meters = 23.66 cubic feet.
Praxair has a tank rated R and they say on their site it 21 cubic feet.
The link below for OBK says 20 cubic feet = 500 batches.

If you want to pay for convenience........

I got to say though, oxygenating your wort for 30 seconds vs. aerating for 30 min. does sound appealing to me.

I'm still using the aquarium pump set up but I'm looking at other options. The reason for that is that I came across an interesting article about oxygenating wort that claims aquarium pump set up is not very effective unless you have a high quality pump that can dish out some serious pressure such as 8-10 psi.

I looked at some hi pressure pumps but they are pricey so maybe pure oxygen is the way to go.
