I have a 6 gal glass carboy for my secondary and a ready supply of food grade plastic buckets for my primarie(s). If I want to fill my secondary (ie. have 6 gals after the first racking out of the primarie(s) how much "wine" do I need to make in the primary stage? put another way, is there a loss between the amount I put into the primary and what I get out?

There is a loss and I would guess somewhere between a quarter and half a gallon.
