To rack or not to rack?

Post #1 by SeanGodd » 4 years ago

I am brewing my first 5Gal batch next weekend. I am wondering if i should grab another carboy so i can rack to a secondary or should i just keep it in the primary for 2-3 weeks then bottle?
Cheers!!

Most these days us a single vessel- there is times you use a secondary for dry hop(although I do in primary) or adding fruit

you should grab another so you can have two brews going
Beer has food value, food has no beer value...

I second oro's recommendation. Unless you're ageing more than a month, or adding something to the beer post-fermentation, there is no benefit to moving the beer to a secondary.

Ferment in the 6 gal fermenter and rack into the 5 gal fermenter. You want as little headspace as possible...

I rack and I think that my beers are pretty good. There is an excellent podcast on brewers radio (may 2012) where they brew the same batch and use only a primary, and do a primary with secondary then do a blind taste test. The results are surprising.
Some beers definitely are better from aging in a secondary, others not.
