Dry hopping question

Post #1 by wookie » 6 years ago

Hi all, Wookie the newbie here,

I'm on my second Brewhouse Kit, IPA flavour. I thought I'd try adding 1 oz of Cascadia hops to the secondary just because I LOVE HOPS!
It has been quite active since and that was over 3 weeks ago. Should I wait until there is no action in the secondary before I rack into bottles?
Thanks

Wookie

If you are absolutely sure all fermentation has finished and the action in your carboy is a CO2 reaction with the hops in secondary, then you should be OK to bottle. Otherwise I would wait until all action has ceased and the SG is constant for at least 3 consecutive days.

I agree with Tony. Dry hop for about a week then with a steady SG you can bottle.

I have just racked from primary to secondary and wish to add an ounce of Australian Galaxy hop pellets for dry hopping. When is the best time to add these hops? Please and thanks.

When you transferred it. But you can add them any time.

Dry hops can be added during primary fermentation, or during secondary fermentation. If added at primary, you want to add them at the height of the krausen when the yeast is on it's way down from working.

Just curious, what is the reasoning behind this?

Far more scientific then I care to learn, but it is how many of the pro brewers are adding dry hops to NEIPAs. Have tried it a few times, seems to help with the haze a bit.

I read yesterday about adding the hops during high Krausen is the yeast helps with oxygen in the hops that blow out during active fermentation. Never tried it myself.
