First Cider Question

Do I need a blow off hose when I make cider? I am cramped for space in my fermentation chamber and may have a problem adding a jar for a blow off hose.

Generally, no. Cider does produce a lot of gas, but doesn't foam much (if at all). I'd cover the top with foil for the first few days to keep the flies out, and then swap for an airlock once it subsides a little.

My experience is the same as Bryan's. I've never had any foam on a cider.

I went with airlocks right from the start last year. No issue aside from a house full of a "farty" smell for 3 weeks from the off gassing (metabisulfite) . You may want to by some candles!

Today is day 5 and my basement smells like ass. I checked them ( Mangrove Jack Pear and Apple ) and they are really bubbling away, but no foam. Can I skip the secondary and leave them in the primary for as long as it takes?

I also made my first cider a few days ago. I went apple picking last weekend and filled up a 10 pound bag to make a cyser (mead/cider combo using apple blossom honey). I also bought a jug of that brown freshly pressed not pasteurized apple juice. I added it to my 1 gallon jug with some spring water and a bit of dextrose to bump up the OG a bit and used some ec-1118 yeast and it's bubbling away. The OG is quite low because I didn't buy that much apple juice, but considering that I've read this yeast is a monster, I'm probably looking at a nice dry 4-4.5%ABV cider.

I am kegging it tomorrow. After I cold crash it, I assume I can use gelatin to clear it?

Had some left over in a 2 L pop bottle. Seems to be clear so I may not need gelatin at all.

Just picked up 18 gallons of fresh press from the orchard, this year I went with WL English Cider yeast. Airlocks were going nuts within 10 hours! Buckets were a tad full (6.5 gal) when I came home from work the day after pitching I had a bit of a mess blowing out through the top of the airlocks but luckily the lids/bungs didn't budge. I used Warthaug's advice from last years batch and (thanks again by the way!) having great luck so far, only difference this year is the yeast strain. I tried experimenting with US-04/US-05 last year, I wasn't too impressed with the end result flavor wise....

Let me know how yours turns out!
