Powdered Brewery Wash alternative

Post #1 by gnarly » 1 year ago

I recently bought some used winemaking equipment, and intend to start making wine again after a hiatus of 10 years. Some of it is pretty grungy, as if the last person who used this just drained the carboys and didn't rinse or clean them. Do you have a prescription for making something like Powdered Brewery Wash, which I gather is very expensive?

I've googled this, but found everything was for the USA, where TSP is banned. Can I just substitute TSP for the TSP/90 that is mentioned? I've seen something called Sodium Metasilicate referenced as well.

Thanks,

Paul

It is pricier, but you don't need a lot of it - a little of the stuff goes a long way for cleaning...

Hi:

Thanks for the tip. I've never used the stuff, and perhaps I only need it once, as my equipment will never get as grungy as this, once it's been well-cleaned.

It's a great cleaner. I use it every time after I'm done brewing as a pseudo-CIP. Gets all the hop gunk out of all the nooks and crannies. I'm just pumping it back and forth between my vessels...

That's my home brew plant. Not my 30 bbl brewhouse though...

You can also use non-scented Oxyclean as a cheaper replacement for PBW.

Thanks Canuck. I've been reading about Oxyclean, and I think I will try that.
