First Cider Experiment

Post by Patrickivan » 2 years ago

I decided to give a cider a go, but didn't want to make a whole batch.

So, I bought 3L of PC brand fresh pressed apple cider, dropped in an 8th oz of dry ale yeast, 1/4c of corn sugar, took out 250ml for a OG reading, put on the fermentation lock, and let it sit for the week and a half, then bottled with some activity left for some carbonation and continued alcohol, and by the time this run on sentence was completed, I have some pretty dammed tasty hard cider!

Holy crap! This is some good stuff. It's lightly carbonated with wee bubbles and I'm pretty buzzed after 3 glasses.

I'm in. Going to make 18L this weekend.

Sounds like something I need to try!
I've never understood the policy against "necro threads" on almost every forum. Why tell us to use the search function for a particular topic, then complain when an older thread has a new post in it?

Try a lager yeast next time! It'll be extremely tasty and pure apple!

If it's any tastier next time, I'm going to be loaded.

I'll give the lager yeast a try. I picked some up.

Seriously? How does it affect the flavour? I've got lots of bread yeast.

I find it ferments out nice. I used it once because I thought I had yeast and didn't, I've used it a few times since.. Leaves a little residual sweetness. I have no actual data for how much it fermented of the total SG. I don't tend to worry too much about that when I make cider. I keep it very simple, juice nutrient and yeast, thats it

I was very happy with the cider. I stopped the fermentation before it became too dry, kegged it, carbed it, and put it in the fridge. I am just blown away with how simple that was.

Shhhhh... If the government find out about this, apple juice will jump up to $5 a can.
