134 Day Old Yeast

Post by Reignman » 3 months ago

Nothing like buying yeast that is 134 days old already. It would not bother me except I paid $11.50 for it.

Yikes, starter time. I have a bad habit of not checking dates when i buy as well.

Online only where I live. I get it though for HB stores, first in, first out...

I stock up when i go to the city, but have to rely on the interwebs too. My problem is buying and then not using...

I am having trouble with my yeast starter. Yeast calculators say I have only 6% viability left. Omega yeast starts with 150 B cells. I am brewing 5.5 gallons of a lager with a gravity around 1.054. Most likely need to do a step up starter though.

I finally got around to making a starter. 152 days old. Took overnight to see any signs of activity. Woke up to foam almost at the top of the flask. A little no-foam took care of it. I emailed Omega yeast and they said a 1 L to a 3 L will do the job.

Well I am trying to wake up some 160 day old lager right now. Made the mistake of going straight to 4 liters.... showing minor points of activity, slow bubbles forming, but nothing that indicates what it should be like. No brewday for me today. Wyeast 2308.
